Oak Dining Tables
What are the benefits of using oak for a dining table?
Oak dining tables are a popular choice for many reasons.
Strength
Oak furniture is strong and durable. Because it is dense and hard, oak dining tables are resistant to dings and dents. This makes them very practical and functional dining tables, particularly for families with young children.
Beauty
With its distinctive warm colour and beautiful grain, oak dining furniture complements both traditional homes as well as more modern design schemes.
Timeless
Oak furniture is timeless in style and is unlikely to ever fall out of style.
Longevity
Quality oak furniture is built to last. If your oak furniture is well looked after and kept away from direct sunlight, radiators and damp, there is no reason that your oak dining table can’t be handed down for generations.
Versatility
With so much oak furniture available on the market, you’ll always be able find other furniture, like sideboards and coffee tables, to match with your oak dining table.
How durable are oak dining tables?
Oak is a dense hardwood, making it the perfect choice if you’re looking for a dining table to withstand constant everyday use. Oak trees have a long growth period, often taking decades to become fully grown — one of the reasons oak furniture tends to cost more than other woods. But it is that slow growth that makes them so sturdy. The slower they grow, the denser and more durable the wood. This means your oak dining table, when properly cared for, will be able to stand the test of time.
Oak dining tables are remarkably resilient and can handle severe damage without showing any signs of wear and tear. This makes them ideal for busy households and for homes with young children. It is a sturdy, class-two timber renowned for its incredible durability, resistance to fungi and, if properly looked after, your oak dining table will last a lifetime.
How do I take care of my oak dining room furniture?
Your oak dining table will last a lifetime if you take some simple steps to care for it. Enjoy the beauty of your oak dining room furniture with these tips.
Position
Wood is a natural material that does not like extreme heat or cold. Radiators will dry your oak dining table out and direct sunlight may fade the finish. Unless your oak dining table has been designed for al fresco use, don’t leave it outside. A well-ventilated spot will let air flow through, keeping the temperature stable and prolonging the life of your oak.
Wax polish
When you first receive your oak dining table, help it adjust to its new environment by treating it with a wax polish. Check you’re happy with the wax you’re going to use by testing it on a part of the dining table that you won’t see, like underneath. If it’s good, apply the wax to the rest of the dining table in the same direction as the wood grain. Let it soak in for a few minutes before buffing to remove the wax and repeat. You’ll want to wax furniture every six months or so, to nourish the wood, protect the grain and form a protective seal.
Clean
With the table waxed and providing a protective layer on your oak dining table, you’ll be able to wipe the tabletop down with a clean, damp cloth during everyday use. For spills that might stain, soak up the liquid with a clean and slightly damp cloth.
